There are also different types of toys that can be used in different situations for example outdoor games and construction sets that are also made of the same material are given as gifts. While these may not be so practical in winter they can often make an enjoyable summer activity.
Many people are turning to toys which are more natural and traditional to give children an understanding of the craft and effort gone into producing them. Wooden toys are also very often of high quality and handmade. Parents also like children to play with similar types of toys that they grew up with as many of them can also be educational. When buying a Christmas or birthday present for a younger member of the family consider giving wooden toys as gifts.
The best toy for girls ages 5-10 are American Girl dolls. They are quite pricey in the $100 range but they are made from very high quality materials that are made to last. Many dolls last for them to pass on to their kids. They are fun to read about (each one comes with a historical book with the doll in the story) learn about and to dress up and play with their friends. There are many off brand dolls and doll clothes that can be purchased for a fraction of the price. Target sells an Our Generation Doll for $30 and Little Adventures sells 18\" doll clothes for $16.
The best toy for boys ages 3-5 is Thomas the Train. Thomas the train toys are also made from high quality wood metal and plastic. A train table makes pretending with Thomas very fun and there are endless possibilities to cities and towns you can create with the tracks and cars. Thomas teaches responsibility which is very important for little boys.
From wooden puzzles toys evolved to something more elaborate during the Victorian era where grown women became obsessed over wooden doll houses that were made with marble and ivory and intricately detailed to resemble a real house and it even reached a point where it actually cost as much as a real house. Another kind of wooden toys that became popular especially during the Middle Ages were wooden puppets which ventriloquists would show off at street-side carnivals and the Lincoln Logs which were notched miniature logs that can be used to build miniature forts and buildings and are still around to this day. The Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright in 1916 and was patterned after the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo which was designed by his father architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
