Soon after the First World War wooden toys became more reflective of the state the world was in during those times with the invention of wooden cars airplanes trains and fire trucks that became very popular with children everywhere. The fact that wooden toys can be made to represent a way of life increased its popularity more because it made children able to relate to the world around them and adapt to the constant changes.
From wooden puzzles toys evolved to something more elaborate during the Victorian era where grown women became obsessed over wooden doll houses that were made with marble and ivory and intricately detailed to resemble a real house and it even reached a point where it actually cost as much as a real house. Another kind of wooden toys that became popular especially during the Middle Ages were wooden puppets which ventriloquists would show off at street-side carnivals and the Lincoln Logs which were notched miniature logs that can be used to build miniature forts and buildings and are still around to this day. The Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright in 1916 and was patterned after the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo which was designed by his father architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
So why would people prefer choosing toys made of wood as gifts instead of the more modern common plastic or electronic toys that children are so familiar with?
While marble rollers are for children over 3 years of age we do have a great one for the real little tykes! This one is great for even a one year old but older ones love it too. It comes with 12 large colored wooden balls and they zip down the roller and stay in the wooden tray. We are the only store that carries this item and there have been so many little kids who enjoy this game. The balls are painted with safe non toxic paint and come in red orange yellow green blue and purple. These also help children recognize colors. The opening is large enough for them to drop the ball down and theyll enjoy the sound of dropping balls! The wooden ball roller is a unique wooden toy!
Wooden toys are becoming popular as gifts for young children as an alternative to the more mass-produced variety of toys. They are safe and designed especially for younger users and are often made of sustainable woods such as rubberwood or even recycled wood. Any paints used are almost always non toxic and often eco friendly too.
